I am a Career Coach and Trainer. My portfolio career of 25 years includes coaching, training, writing and audiovisual production. My style of working is flexible and wide-ranging with specialisms including: Career Development, Personality Testing, Effective Communication and Influencing Skills, and Interview Preparation. The focus of my work is to find the right career fit for your aspirations, talents and skills. I use a creative and intuitive approach but give advice grounded in practicality. I will encourage and support you in the process of finding and articulating your career vision and converting it into action.
I strongly believe that there is a place for all of us in a workplace that allows us to flourish and recognises our special talents. However, I also believe that the right career for you will not be without challenges and hard choices. The process of getting to that career will involve hard work and commitment. When self-help books say “finding work you love means never having to work again” – they are deluding you. In my experience, when you find the work you love – you will still have challenges and disappointments – but they will lead to real personal and professional growth. Failure is a good, but not very kind, teacher.
As an experienced coach and mentor I can use the benefit of over 30 years experience in the private, financial and public sector to help you explore your options in a safe and supportive environment and to help you find the right outlets for your unique skills and talents.
Previous experience includes 5 years in the Institute of Public Administration, 10 years in Irish Life in Staff Development and 20 years as a freelance consultant, author, producer, trainer and coach. I have published three books on career matters and have written many other articles and papers. My fourth book on selection interviewing (co-author Mary Hanson) was published in 2013. I am working on another book project at the moment.
Associate Faculty member: Irish Management Institute, Institute of Public Administration, MBA Smurfit College UCD, Retirement Planning Council, and the International MSc in Business Consulting, Fachhochschule, Wiener Neustadt (Austria).
I have direct experience of the following sectors: Financial and Public Services, Charitable Organisations, Broadcasting and the Arts. Outside of my career and training work my abiding passion is music I am a singer, organist and pianist and freelance broadcaster.
Outside Career Coaching and Training I am very involved in the world of music. My musical interests encompass Early Music, especially Bach, but extend through most Classical Music (especially Mozart and Beethoven), Jazz (Oscar Peterson and Jacques Loussier) to Sixties Rock (Beatles and others). With Jack Morrissey I perform as one half of Jack&Mac – we perform comedy and satirical songs – most often in the John Field Room in the National Concert Hall.
Out of doors you may find me hill walking or cycling. My favourite authors include Arthur Conan Doyle, Henning Mankel, Charles Handy and James Thurber.
